Elected president of Philippines in February 1986, but entered office only after army mutiny led to overthrow of Marcos. Gained worldwide renown for her performance, especially acclaimed in United States during visit in September 1986. Deeply religious and politically inexperienced, agreed to run for president as only way to unify anti-Marcos forces, campaigned vigorously with help of Catholic Church. Serene, poised, outwardly gentle, but strong-willed. Promulgated new constitution and conducted legislative and local elections after taking office, tried unsuccessfully to negotiate with Communist insurgents.
