Foremost Marcos opponent whose assassination in August 1983 sparked widespread resistance to Marcos regime and eventually led to its downfall. Widely known as “Ninoy,” born in 1932, began career as journalist, first gained fame by negotiating surrender of Luis Taruc, leader of Hukbalahap insurgency; later entered politics and successively elected mayor, province governor and senator. Rambunctious, articulate and ambitious. Arrested when Marcos declared martial law in September 1972, spent nearly eight years in jail before going into exile in United States.
