Douglas Macarthur
General; American most admired by Filipinos. Born in 1880 in Little Rock, Arkansas, first went to Philippines with army engineers in 1904, returned as garrison commander from 1922 to 1925, back there again from 1928 to 1930 as commander for archipelago. Returned in 1935 as military adviser to Quezon, appointed supreme commander for Pacific in 1941. Fled Philippines after Japanese invasion, liberated islands in 1945, instrumental in restoring prewar political structure. Died in 1964.
