Leader of nationalist forces, first against Spain in 1896; later fought against the United States beginning in 1899. Declared independence of Philippines in June 1898; proclaimed president of first Philippine republic in January 1899. Courageous but naïve, believed that United States would back his cause. Captured by Americans in March 1901 after fighting for two years, pledged allegiance to United States. Died in 1964 at age of ninety-four.
